Decay Preserves: Skid's first essay
In 2012, I wrote a real-time, web-based, multimedia, epistolary, serial novel called Decay Preserves. It was about the fictional Stan ("Skid") Buckham and his attempts to secure state funding for decay preserves. I wrote The Upside of Cancer after recovering from stage 2 kidney cancer. In the following years, I lost my brother and a friend to cancer. Their ordeals made me doubt this essay's worth. Yet my friend asked to re-read it when she was first diagnosed, and an acquaintance halfway around the world asked for it when her aunt was diagnosed. And it still makes sense to me.
